Terbentuk pertama kali pada tahun 1985 dengan nama Majesty. Didirikan oleh John Petrucci, John Myung, dan Mike Portnoy, saat mereka belajar di “Berklee College of Music” di Boston, Massachusetts, Amerika.

lagu Spirit Carries On itu secara kesimpulannya adalah, “lo telah terlahir kembali secara sempurna (as human), dan dengan keterbatasan akal pikiran yang tidak bisa menjawab setiap pertanyaan (misteri), akhirnya lo pasrah dan setelah itu lo baru bisa mendapatkan pencerahan, dan pada akhirnya lo akan bebas sebebas-bebasnya”.
Meskipun telah terjadi beberapa kali perubahan lineup, tiga anggota asli tetap bersama-sama dengan James LaBrie dan Jordan Rudess sampai 8 September 2010, ketika Mike Portnoy meninggalkan band. Pada bulan Oktober 2010, band ini mengadakan audisi drummer untuk menggantikan Portnoy. Mike Mangini diumumkan sebagai drummer baru pada tanggal 29 April 2011, setelah menyisihkan 6 drummer kelas dunia.
